MCIU Offices, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire

There was a knock on his office door, and Danny shouted, ‘Come in!’

The door opened. Tina and Rob walked in, clutching their enquiry logs in one hand and a mug of coffee in the other.

Danny said, ‘Grab a seat. I want to go through the two enquiries with you both, to see exactly where we are. We need to drive things forward; I think these enquiries are in danger of stalling, and I want to make sure we aren’t missing something. Let’s start with the fires.’

Rob opened his log and said, ‘Two dwelling house fires, both started using petrol as an accelerant. The first at Blidworth; the second in Mansfield. All three victims are elderly. Joe Sinclair from Blidworth had no next of kin, and enquiries so far have found no reason why he should be targeted. The landlord of the property is no longer of interest. We found nothing to connect him in any way with the fire. The house-to-house enquiries at Blidworth, carried out by the Special Operations Unit, haven’t turned anything up at all. We are running out of viable enquiries to push this investigation forward. As you know, fire and forensics don’t mix. We’ve got nothing back from scenes of crime, and although Tony Parrish has been a massive help in identifying the fact that the fire was arson, he can’t really help us any further.’

He paused to see if Danny had any questions. When none were forthcoming, he continued, ‘Moving on to the second fire on Finningley Road … Once again, both the victims were elderly – Douglas and Joan Cooper. It’s still early days on the house-to-house enquiries, but so far, they’ve drawn a blank. Again, it’s probably too early to be definite, but we can find no link between either Douglas or Joan Cooper and Joe Sinclair. I might know more after I’ve spoken to the daughter this morning. Sophie Arnold will be here at ten o’clock, to make the formal identification. I’ll talk to her afterwards and see if she’s aware of any link between her mum and dad and Joe Sinclair. I’ll also try to ascertain if her parents had any enemies, or if they had been involved in any recent disputes with anybody. Certainly, the enquiries we’ve made so far haven’t found any.’

Danny interrupted: ‘I wanted to meet Mrs Arnold when she came in today, but I’ve been summoned to headquarters at ten o’clock, for a meeting with Potter. You’ll have to speak to Mrs Arnold without me. Will that cause any issues?’

‘Okay. She wasn’t expecting to see you, so there won’t be a problem. That’s about it for the Mansfield fire.’

‘Forensics?’

‘Again, there’s no forensics from the scene itself. Footwear impressions have been made of the footprints found by Tony. There’s nothing to identify the brand of footwear. Tim Donnelly has informed me that all he can say for definite is that they were made by a work boot of some kind. The size is quite small – probably a size seven or eight.
